11 Things You Must Know About NYSC Orientation Camp

Serving the nation is the dream of every Nigerian undergraduate/graduate. But the success of such individual during the service year depends on his/her ability to understand what NYSC sta

nds for.

The Orientation camp is one of the four cardinal programs of the service year.
Join me as i share some tips that can make or break orientation camp experience.

#1. Don't Lobby for posting: Research has proved that most successful corps members don't lobby postings to preferred places. Because Mr. A succeeded at a particular place is no guarantee that Mr. B will also succeed there. What matters most is your skills and resourcefulness.

#2. Don't try to Impress: Always remember your root, don't try to act/form what you are not in a bid to impress friends, potential lovers and NYSC officials. Because at the end of the Orientation camp, your real picture (different from the camp life) will be seen.

#3. Spend Moderately: Try as much as you can to limit your spending, remember after the first allowance you will receive in camp, there will be no more allowance for 30 days till your account details and personal database is created at the Local Government where you are posted to! Be wise, so you don't engage gear for a hard starting.

#4. Make Use of the Kitchen/Avoid the Mammy Market: Access the quality of food in the kitchen and make your choice on a particular meal you can settle for in camp. I trust, some meals are worth going for in the kitchen.
Choose periods on time to visit Mammy Market, some of the meals at Mammy are sub-standard and the general hygiene conditions not convincing enough in some cases. Make a tour of the market and check the hygiene standards first before getting involved.

#5. Avoid Being too Emotionally attached to Friends: Find some means and strike a balance between the head and the heart, so you don't get so emotionally attached to a particular person, because what NYSC has joined together in three weeks, posting will surely put asunder! It will hurt so much to see you lover/friend posted to another region. Such mishap is capable of unsettling you and frustrate your service year.

#6. Adhere to Camp Rules: Drop all stunts at home, when at camp, please endevour to adhere to specified rules as given by the camp director, camp commandant, head of security etc. Ensure you capture all signals from the Biggler who blows the Bigo for camp activities (official/unofficial)

#7. Attend Lectures, Workshops & Other Activities: If you are posted to a place you have not gotten a spell before, please try as much as possible to attend all lectures in camp as regards to the customs and tradition of the place, so you don't break the rules of the community you will be posted to! Also try as much as possible to attend some professional lectures and register for programs such as Project Management, NIM, Safety Programs, etc. Some discounts apply in camp!

#8. Don't Join too many Groups: Don't get too excited with groups as they present themselves in camp, stick to one or two to allow you concentrate on other activities.

#9. Groups to Join: There are so many groups to join. The Orientation Broadcasting Service (OBS), Band/Quarter Guard, Pet, Quater Guard, Security Vanguards, Utility/Technical Unit, Medical Unit, ICT Socials/Event Managers, Sports, Protocols etc. But your success in any of the above mentioned groups hangs on your humility and ability to learn fast. Even if you happen to be a professional in any of the fields, please try as much as possible to be humble and abide by instructions as dished off by NYSC officials in charge and some already existing corps members who will be drafted in to train and motivate you(the new corpers) at least for the first 3 days of the exercise.
~The OBS is the life wire of the camp, journalist, broadcasters, tv/radio presenters, marketers and media related/interested persons please engage yourselves in.
~The Medical Units is strictly for professional (Doctors, Nurses and other health related professionals).
~The Band Groups welcomes people with passion for Music and ones who can play the instruments available.
~Utility/Technical Unit is where engineers make a fair share of their presence felt in camp, please join and help the orientation camp facilities work at full efficiency.
~If You are a good MC or event manager, please join the socials group and organize the MISS NYSC/Mr. Macho event and other social activities in camp. Comedians, Song Artiste, Dancers and Promoters should also join the train!
~The ICT unit need ICT experts to help them gather data, process and facilitate registration activities of corps members!
~Sports unit is a medium for selection of potential footballers and volleyballers to team up with already existing corpers for the annual DG's cup. Sports freaks and players please take advantage. As for the other groups, please inquire for information when you get to camp.
*N/B: If you are joining any of the groups with the hope of getting favour for posting, please have a rethink. Because you are bound for a huge upset at the end of camp, the units are purely voluntary organizations!

#10. Keep Fellowship intact: Muslims have the opportunity to be at the Mosque, 2pm on Fridays, same do Christian on Sunday mornings. There are also other activities that will keep you intact with your maker.
So many fellowships do exist in camp namely: NCCF, RCCF, NACC, Baptist, Winners etc...just make a choice and keep it logged on!
